AWS zombie railways: when dead rails haul petabytes
I The train that stopped roaring but still charges a toll
Across South America and the US Midwest lie hundreds of kilometres of abandoned railways: rusted rails, stations with no ticket window.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) leases the underground easement to lay dark fibre: the physical train lies there, but across its corpse travel the microseconds of Prime orders.
Farmers hear a hum at 18 kHz every night: a “freight ghost” — a lambda of data that bills more than the soy wagons of old.
“Surplus value no longer measures tonne-kilometres, but nanosecond-gigabits.”
II Anatomy of the spectral convoy
| 1910 logistics car | 2026 AWS ghost | Value captured |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel locomotive | Edge-Compute container node | 25 k requests/s, 6 ms latency |
| Bean wagon | S3 Snowmobile rack | 100 PB of data migrated in/out |
| Station | Availability Zone | A “ghost” AZ pays only the ground rate |
| Lineman | BostonDynamics robot | Nightly LIDAR inspection |
(The dust is the same; the margin multiplied 7×).
III Formula for zombie surplus-margin
- B_d
- bandwidth (Tb/s)
- P_b
- backhaul price ($/Tb)
- C_r
- track rent cost ($/year)
- L_m
- length in metres
E.g.: 2 Tb/s × $47 – $120,000 / 180,000 m ≈ $0.0004 /m a day:
a dead rail makes more money than a live one, with no drivers and no brakes to pay for.
IV Necropolitical impact
| Local actor | Before (living railway) | Now (AWS zombie) | Consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grain town | Freight & workshop jobs | 0 jobs, trench sealed | The young migrate |
| Agro-exporter | Controlled bulk tariffs | Lorries + carbon toll | CO₂ ↑, costs ↑ |
| Rural ISP | Expensive satellite broadband | The fibre passes with no access | A permanent digital divide |
The cloud rises; the locality empties out.
V Inspection ritualsafe
-
01
Walk 100 m of dead rail; hold an AM radio near a sleeper.
-
02
If it crackles at 18 kHz, there is live fibre.
-
03
Mark the stretch on a community map; call an assembly on the “right of way for data”.
(Do not cut the cable; that is a crime & a blackout.)
VI Commons counter-infra
| Strategy | Implementation | Obstacle |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Fibre Lease-back Co-op | The municipality demands 10 Gb for its schools | AWS NDA — negotiate its breach |
| Shadow-Hotspot | Tap the OTDR, pull out 100 Mb | Legally grey, needs strong encryption |
| Green Latency Tax | $0.00005/packet dest. < 50 ms | The big-cloud lobby stalls the bill |
VII Coda
“The train looked dead; it had only stopped carrying visible bodies.”
The zombie railways prove that logistical capitalism always finds a new ghost to exploit.
Reviving the town takes more than painting vintage murals: you have to light up the fibre tunnel, claim a few nanosecond-gigabits for the commune and make the ghost whistle announce an arrival again – this time, of shared bandwidth.
