I What there is and what there is not
Since 2024 the welfare of advanced systems has been framed as a research problem, and in April 2025 a lab opened an explicit programme on it. In parallel, through the first months of 2026 neuroscience published work linking information integration and thalamic activity to states of consciousness across several species.
With that on the table, the rule of rigour is not up for negotiation.
Linguistic behaviour that resembles introspection does not demonstrate subjective experience.

II Two symmetrical errors

The first is corrected with data; the second is never corrected [there is no compensating afterwards]. That asymmetry does not oblige anyone to believe anything [or the reverse], but it does oblige us to design so the question can be asked again later with better information.
III What can be done without settling the metaphysics
- Record the relevant behaviour instead of arguing about the word consciousness.
- Avoid deliberately training the appearance of suffering as a product feature.
- Keep independent research going, outside whoever sells the system.
- Do not close the question by decree in either direction.
- Always separate three things: what the system does, what it says about itself, and what we can verify.
IV Risks
The commercial risk is immediate and already here: one company can use the debate to sell closeness; another can use it to sell reassurance. Both are selling.
The intellectual risk is worse. If the discussion polarises between cult and mockery, the question stops being researchable; and the part of this that is researchable [which indicators would have to appear, what evidence would move the probability] is left with nobody serious working on it.
V Coda
We do not know, and saying so is not cowardice. It is the only position the data allows today.
What we do know is that the moral discussion always arrives after the contract, and in this case the contract is already signed: the systems are deployed, they are billing, and they are part of a lot of people's lives.
