Chronophages: devourers of the future
I Time no longer passes: it is herded
There are firms selling micro-policies on the ten minutes you are running late; exchanges that slice productivity futures at the scale of seconds; apps that “pre-spend” tomorrow's leisure—today—against your live heart rate.
These entities trade neither goods nor data: they devour portions of the future, chew them in algorithms and regurgitate them as immediate instalments.
I call them chronophages: socio-technical organisms whose diet is duration.
Tomorrow is eaten in mouthfuls the size of a notification.
II Anatomy of the temporal predator
| Organ | 2026 example | How it ingests the future |
|---|---|---|
| Credit jaw | “Stream-Now-Pay-Whenever” (SN-PW) | Pre-loads your balance at –10 % to guarantee ad-free binge-watching |
| Prediction stomach | LTST* models that monetise your micro-naps | They predict your dead time → auction it to hyper-casual games |
| Staking intestine | “Time-Farm” DeFi pools | You lock 3 years of tokens; you get the yield today → you are left with no liquidity tomorrow |
| Memetic gland | Platforms that publish automatic spoilers | They steal future surprise and turn it into a click now |
*LTST = Long-Term Short-Term transformer (models that spin day + year together).
III Formula for the chrono-caloric mouthful
- ΔT captured = minutes of future brought forward
- E attentional = cognitive energy per minute (≈ 1 cal)
- C latency = delivery delay (the smaller it is, the higher the caloric value)
The chronophages maximise \text{Kcal\_τ} by sucking up ever smaller spans at zero latency.
IV Signs of chrono-parasitic infestation
- Promise deficit — Six-month plans look like a fantasy; the diary feeds on 48 h windows.
- Prospective amnesia — You remember yesterday and today, but not what you were supposed to do next week.
- Notification hyper-pressure — A permanent sense of a clock at the back of your neck, even in silence.
V Strategies of extirpation (or controlled symbiosis)
| Antidote | Procedure | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon fast | 1 day with no digital calendars; only sun and shade to measure by | Reclaiming the circadian rhythm |
| Reverse contract | A DAO that pays yield if you keep free spans | Monetising the absence of commitment |
| Temporal crypto-capsule | Encrypt 3 h of personal data; it unlocks in 7 days | Blocks instant monetisation |
| Voluntary obsolescence | Use hardware with at least 500 ms of latency | Cuts the chronophage's appetite (fewer Kcal_τ) |
(Safe practices; stop if they cause excessive stress.)
VI Derived pathologies
- Future-bulimia — Planning frantically, vomiting the plans at the first distraction.
- Backlog obesity — An endless list of courses, series, side-projects never digested.
- Anaemia of wonder — An inability to be surprised: every novelty has already been “pre-read” by teasers.
VII Coda
“Do not run out of tomorrow before nightfall.”
The chronophage is no mythical enemy; it is the voracious face of our zero-latency economy.
We can kill it… or tame it: let it nibble crumbs of minutes while we silo whole hours in offline barns.
The future is still there—we just have to hide it better than the algorithms can look.
