Churches of the Void: liturgies for the sixth extinction

I Genesis of a negative creed

Forest fires that blacken midday, reefs that bleach, species that vanish with no press release.
In this terrain of the “already-too-late” arise the Churches of the Void: post-religious collectives that celebrate, not a creator god, but the growing absence left by ecological collapse.
Their theology promises no salvation; it offers active contemplation of the end as a political and aesthetic lever.

“When the world empties, the rite is remembering it as it falls” — The Nulla EcclesiaManifesto, 2024.

II Cardinal rites

Liturgy Staging Affective-political purpose
Mass of Carbon Silence A darkened industrial hall; CO₂ measured in ppm projected on the walls Feeling the atmospheric weight we cannot see
Procession of Antispecies XR avatars of extinct animals parade through a public square Collective mourning, memory made flesh
Data Fast 24 h with no internet and no fossil energy; mycelium candles Exposing the hidden dependence of consumption
Eucharist of Rubble Eating black bread with a symbolic dust of plant ash Acknowledging the burnt matter that holds us up

The rituals mix performance art, scientific data and voluntary austerity.

III Infrastructure of the empty faith

  1. “Zero-lux” sanctuaries
    – Concrete buildings with no LEDs and no amplification; lit only by indirect sunlight.
  2. PM 2.5 chamber
    – A sealed room where you breathe air filtered to pre-industrial levels (350 ppm CO₂). Only 10 min per worshipper.
  3. Mortálitas DAO
    – An on-chain treasury funds litigation against polluting megaprojects; votes weighted by inverse per-capita footprint (whoever pollutes less, decides more).

IV Internal tensions

Paradox Practical manifestation
Anti-proselytism vs. viral growth The networks post photos of the rituals; the like-shock brings new adepts and raises the digital footprint
Austerity vs. effective politics Donations refuse to fund air lobbying → they lose parliamentary influence
Collective grief vs. action Some of the faithful stall in eco-paralysing mourning; the leaders draw up guides to emotional self-management

V Legal crossroads (2026-2028)

  • EU — the status of an “eco-nihilist confession”: a debate over exempting the Churches of the Void from tax for their educational work.
  • Brazil — the “Environmental Mourning Act”: it recognises the right to hold ceremonies in burnt territories; the Churches help draft the regulations.
  • USA — the “Nulla v. DakotaOil” case: the Mortálitas DAO sues an oil company for “liturgical violation” by polluting the air of its open-air sanctuary.

VI Manual of safe participation

  1. 01

    Psychic responsibility
    – Novice practitioners must attend with a sponsor; the rites can set off severe eco-anxiety.

  2. 02

    Transparent footprint
    – Every ceremony publishes its electricity use, transport and waste—the void is not invoked with hidden hypocrisy.

  3. 03

    Rotation of grief/action
    – The calendar requires that every rite of silence be followed by a day of restoration (planting, riverbank clean-up).

  4. 04

    Recording licence
    – Videos/photos of the rite must carry a “liturgical context” metadata tag so they are not fetishised without explanation.

VII Coda

“We do not gather to escape the end, but to look at it straight and trace the outline of what is still left.”

The Churches of the Void do not ask you to believe, they ask you to bear witness.
In every liturgy beats the intuition that naming the loss —with aesthetic and ethical rigour— is the first vaccine against resignation.
Perhaps, in the echo of those bare temples, the will is born to conserve enough that one day there will be less to mourn.
