CPU-grit micropolitics: thread scheduling as a digital panopticon
I Silicon watches and punishes
In Foucault's enlightened prison, bodies were disciplined with bells, timetables, straight corridors.
In 2026, the cell is a CPU scheduler: it decides which process gets 5 ns of glory and which it condemns to the limbo of sleep.
Every tick is a guard asking “do you deserve to live?” —and the answer is dictated by a CFS algorithm, a military real-time kernel or an AI that adjusts priorities according to your wallet.
“Obedience does not beat in the heart: it beats in the CR3 register.”
II Anatomy of the silicon panopticon
| Stratum | Disciplinary device | Desired conduct | Implicit punishment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 0: Task queue | Dynamic priority (nice, VRUNTIME) |
“Interactive” processes (UI) | Starvation for batch compute |
| Level 1: cgroups | CPU/mem quotas ≈ social classes | Containment of free apps | Throttle 90 % if it overruns |
| Level 2: SELinux domains | Syscall access rule | Good sys behaviour | Sigkill with no warning |
| Level 3: Hypervisor credit | The premium VM gets the burst | “Spot” cloud payment | Eviction in microseconds |
(Replace “process” with “digital citizen” and the panopticon comes back to life).
III Equation of thread obedience
- P
- assigned priority
- I
- “interactivity” (no. of UI syscalls / s)
- W
- accumulated wait time
- D
- past CPU debt
If O < 1 → the thread loses its quantum, its context is stored away (oblivion);
O ≥ 1 → execution privilege, an 8 ms spotlight.
IV Possible micro-insurrections
| Hack | Action | Foucauldian effect |
|---|---|---|
| Nice-bomb | Dozens of ghost nice -20 processes |
They saturate VRUNTIME, taking visibility from the “noble” apps |
| Sleepless Loop | A mining thread “interacts” via an ioctl loop | It gets tagged interactive, steals quantum |
| Cgroup Robin-Hood | A script reassigns weights when it detects starvation | Redistributes compute, slows the ostentatious UI |
(Lab only; in production = ban).
V Observation ritualsafe
-
01
htopin tree mode; filter by VRUNTIME. -
02
Find the top-dog process (low VRUNTIME).
-
03
Renice it +5 and watch: it drops in CPU seconds, the UI stutters.
-
04
Ask yourself: which absolute users govern your machine—and your day?
VI Towards an emancipatory scheduler
- Ethical priority — boost open-science tasks; throttle the ad farms.
- Communal quota — 10 % of ticks reserved for cooperative software.
- Readable audit-log — the kernel discloses who lived, who died, and why.
A scheduler like that would make visible the capillary power that today pulses unseen in every clock.
VII Coda
“Freedom begins in the context switcher.”
Changing laws without touching the scheduler is make-up.
Foucault shouts at us from /proc/schedstat: as long as the thread of your idea gets less quantum than the thread of the advert, you are still a prisoner.
Free a tick, free a world.
