Temporada 5 · Descolonizar la Singularidad · JVV-T5-08
E-waste voodoo in Ghana: an exorcism of silicon and lead
I Agbogbloshie: the crater that swallows computers
In Accra, the Agbogbloshie dump takes in 250,000 t of electronic waste a year.
CRT monitors melt, motherboards burn to ash; boys pull out copper, breathe in bromide, earn 2 USD a day.
But at nightfall the neighbourhood shamans build altars out of heat sinks, chicken bones and red oxide dust: e-waste vodún — a rite that keeps watch so the spirits of the West do not colonise local lungs.
“Lead does not kill alone; its ghost mortgages the neighbourhood's sleep.”
II Liturgy of the silicon-fetish
| Step | Chthonic instrument | Magico-technical action | Physical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invocation | A burnt Pentium III chip | A sigil is chalked onto it | Declares the metal “the master's body” |
| Acid sacrifice | A used HCl drum | Poured over the casings | Separates copper, green smoke to the sky |
| Ash blowing | A PC fan stripped of its shroud | Aims the dust at a wooden totem | Tracks the direction of the toxic wind |
| Sealing | Epoxy resin + ash | Encapsulates scraps of gold & lead | Makes a “contained fire” amulet |
(Authentic rite, condensed, not to be reproduced — toxicity).
III Formula for spectral density
- \rho_\mathrm{Pb}, \rho_\mathrm{Br} = mass of lead/bromide released (g)
- A_\mathrm{ritual} = altar surface (m²)
- t = time in hours
If \Xi > 0.8 g·m⁻²·h⁻¹ the shaman declares a “heavy spirit” and halts the burning for 24 h.
IV Eco-voodoo hacks 2025-26
| Intervention | Symbolic mischief | Material KPI |
|---|---|---|
| Copper-mask: cosplay mask with cable filigree | Turns the scrapper → guardian | [Pb] in urine ↓ 27 % |
| QR vodún: epoxy totem + IPFS code | Tourists scan → donate 0.001 ETH | 67 kg of boards sent to clean recycling |
| Solar coil: serpent altar, black PET tube | Boils water for acid → less firewood | 14 t CO₂ avoided / year |
V Household ritualsafe
-
01
Find an old keyboard; prise off the “Esc” key.
-
02
Boil it in soapy water for 10 min; dry it.
-
03
Carry it for 24 h; touch the key at every doom-scroll notification.
-
04
At the end, decide whether to delete 20 MB of photos or archive them — your miniature exorcism of digital rubbish.
VI Paradoxes & shields
| Risk | Symptom | Community countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Exoticism-tour | Influencer selfie in the toxic smoke | The neighbourhood council charges a 20 USD camera fee |
| NGO green-washing | An art workshop with PCBs, no wages | A fair-scrap contract = 5 USD/day minimum |
| State repression | Police burn the totems as “witchcraft” | 3D-printed mobile altar, the QR rotates its location |
VII Coda
“Every inch of cable burns twice: once in the throat and once in history.”
E-waste voodoo does not romanticise the burning; it sanctifies it, to remind us that the toxin is colonial inheritance repackaged as charity.
Until the North pays its leaden debt, the sheet-metal drum will keep beating in Agbogbloshie, making sure the silicon ghosts do not devour what air is left.
