Fisherian (haunt)ology: exorcising ghosts in the 50 ms latency
I The echo hiding between frames
Mark Fisher defined hauntology as the spectral presence of aborted futures that keep prowling the culture.
In 2026 the ghosts no longer howl in lo-fi vinyl but in network latency: there, among packets held back 50 ms, a Windows 95 hum leaks through, a jungle breakbeat, a GeoCities banner.
The optical fibre network shudders like Victorian plumbing: nobody repairs it, they only add an emoji filter.
“Nostalgia stopped reminding us of our childhood: now it reminds the algorithm who we were when we did not yet need it.”
II Table of spectral manifestations 2026
| Context | Ghost | Living symptom | Antidote injection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 K streaming | 1993 VHS microglitch | 0.1 s buffer, pink noise | A 3 s silent interval every 10 min |
| AI-core playlists | Amen break sample | Dopamine pulse +6 % | Insert a Zorn 7/8 pattern to break the loop |
| UI design | WinXP gradient | The scroll rate drops | High contrast mode 1 h/day |
| Urban policy | The 2008 slogan “Yes We Can” | A recycled meme in a local campaign | The source PDF linked (with its date) |
III Formula for the degree of haunting
- R_p
- recurrence of the ghost pattern (events/h)
- M_s
- memetic intensity (shares/1000 views)
- \tau_c
- contextualisation time (s) given to the user
If \tau_c < 5 s → H grows: the context falls short, the ghost rules.
IV Exorcism ritualsafe
-
01
Pick the retro clip TikTok keeps replaying at you (≤ 15 s).
-
02
Download it and slow it to 10 % speed; mute the audio.
-
03
Add a white-noise track; watch the whole thing.
-
04
Feel the dopaminergic drop: the ghost with no hook loses its power.
V “House Without Echo” architecture (a proposal)
| Room | Design | Anti-spectral function |
|---|---|---|
| Hall | A broken CRT showing timestamps | Breaks temporal linearity |
| Living room | 44 Hz pink-noise speakers | Erases the TikTok earworm |
| Corridor | LEDs that change every visit | Prevents fixation on a nostalgic colour |
| Archive | Zip disks + a drive | Confronts obsolete materiality: spine, dust |
On the way out, the visitor leaves with a loss of retro magnetism for 72 h.
VI Coda
“The ghost needs repetition; cut the loop and it goes back to being dust.”
Exorcising hauntology does not mean burning history: it means giving it a date, a texture, a pause.
When the echo is named and slowed until it turns boring, the present gets its nerve back to invent something that is not a remake.
Fisher wanted a future; James offers 50 ms of silence so the future can show its face.
