Haute-Hauntwave: nostalgia burned onto post-Pantone skin
I When the spectre becomes a catwalk
Mark Fisher diagnosed hauntology as a cultural ghost that suspends the future and replays lo-fi loops of an unrealised past.
The artist Donna Huanca paints living bodies with implosive pigments, covers skin in layers of dust, latex and textile glitch until the flesh disappears behind texture.
Together they inspire Haute-Hauntwave: a show/rite where memory stops being a vaporwave track and becomes a second dermis—a nostalgia you wear and then burn on the catwalk.
“Hearing the echo is not enough; you have to stitch it to the epidermis and feel it char.”
II Structure of the performance (blueprint mode)
| Phase | Action | Fisher drive | Huanca material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-show | Sample VHS audio from 1996 series → stretch it 16× |
Capitalist realism: an infinite loop |
Grey pigment + chrome sprayed over the models' torsos |
| Catwalk I | The models advance very slowly; each step triggers a hauntwave synth | The absent future is prolonged | Ultramarine dust + plaster; the skin looks like VHS noise |
| Mid-burn | An IR laser gilds the dust; it gives off a “old plastic” smell | A sudden loss of comfort | Nylon drapes melt, revealing a second fluorescent layer |
| Catharsis | A rupturist noise beat at 175 BPM (Zorn-style) cuts the loop | The spectre breaks ↠ a violent present | Thermal pigment shifts colour with body heat |
| Post-show | The remains of the set are vacuumed up and sealed in resin | An absent archive: nothing to file | The resin is auctioned as a CO₂-positive relic |
(An artistic map; not an arson manual).
III Formula for nostalgic heat
- P_{\text{recuerdo}}
- power of the retro stimulus (lumens + dB)
- \Delta T_{\text{piel}}
- °C rise in the thermal pigment
- K_{\text{desfase}}
- time until the audience notices the simulacrum
When N_t > 1 nostalgia stops being a benign echo → it turns into cutaneous dissonance; the audience sweats anxiety.
IV Household hauntwave ritualsafe
-
01
Find a 90 s children's clip from your own childhood.
-
02
Play it at 5 % speed; volume –8 dB.
-
03
Switch on a 500 K warm lamp in front of a mirror.
-
04
Watch your skin: does it shiver? Note the exact second tenderness turns into discomfort.
(No burning clothes, no laser).
V Risks and counterweights
| Danger | Symptom | Countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Trauma fetishism | The audience wants the infinite loop “because it hurts so good” | Insert an abrupt noise cut every 3 min |
| Commodifying the spectre | Brands print “hauntwave™” pigment at 49 € | Anti-brand CC-BY-SA licence |
| A real burn | Solvent-based pigments → literal fire | Use fireproof layers; burn only the surface nylon |
VI Coda
“The skin remembers what Spotify forgets.”
Haute-Hauntwave swallows sonic nostalgia and re-materialisesit: a sensory archive that, to free us, must be burned—but burned on living bodies, so that forgetting leaves a scar.
Between Fisher and Huanca we learn that the future does not arrive until the dermis stops pretending the past was comfortable.
Next time you hum a vintage jingle, ask yourself:
do you carry it inside, or wear it as a ghost that is still collecting rent?
