Huanca pigment: post-Pantone skin and chromatic glitch

I Pigment until the body is a noise canvas

The artist Donna Huanca assembles skin, mineral dust, latex and projections to erase the border between flesh and surface.
Her palette flees the Pantone catalogue: it mixes ultra-pharmaceutical blue, volcanic oxide and a UV fluorescence that vibrates outside the sRGB gamut.
In 2026 the textile-bio labs replicate that deviation: enter Huanca pigment, photochromic microcapsules embedded in a dermal cream; they shift tone with exhaled CO₂, sweat pH or an LED pulse.
The skin becomes a glitch display—a living stain that reveals metabolism and mood with no apps, no smartwatch, pure mutant colour.

“You no longer wear clothes: you wear chromatic firmware running on your epidermis.”

II Anatomy of living colour

Layer 2026 component Trigger Visible change
Mineral base Silica + micronised ferrous oxide > 34 °C at the skin From cement grey to deep blue
Photonic microcapsule Liquid-crystal polymer CO₂ ↑ 200 ppm on the exhale Intermittent cyan flash
UV-sensitive pigment Fluoro-spiropyran 365 nm light (rave, operating theatre) Volcanic neon pink
Chromo-graphic nanoquill Silver elastomer threads Heart rate > 120 BPM Indigo zig-zag pulse

(Not a reproducible recipe; an aesthetic cartography only.)

III Formula for the chromatic turn

C(t) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \bigl( k_i \cdot S_i(t)^{\beta_i} \bigr)
S_i(t)
physiological signal (pulse, CO₂, pH)
k_i
pigment sensitivity
\beta_i
non-linear exponent per layer

When C crosses the 0.75 threshold (0-1 on the LAB scale), the skin enters glitch mode: the stains fracture into a Voronoi pattern and the person becomes a living totem of their own vital signs.

IV Uses and deviations

Scenario Sensory power Danger
Post-human rave The skin vibrates at the same BPM as the bass Super-stimulus; visual fatigue
Anxiety therapy The colour fades when the breathing slows The “bio-feedback” shield can become a dependency
NFT-circuit fashion Every chromatic variation is minted Exploitation of biometric data
Silent protest The pigment turns black when it detects tear gas The police classify dissidents by colour

V Ritual of the dermal glitchsafe

  1. 01

Shine a 365 nm torch on your skin for 5 s.

  2. 02

Watch the after-image on your retina.

  3. 03

Shut your eyes and exhale long; imagine the colour that would bloom if your CO₂ were ink.

  4. 04

Draw that tone with a crayon on paper.

  5. 05

Ask yourself: who should read this colour, you or an algorithm?

VI Ethical counterweights

  • “Skin-ware” licence — Using the pigment requires that the physiological data stays on-device.
  • Privacy filter — An over-cream layer blocks the UV turn if the user does not consent.
  • Right to opacity — Municipal rule: a public service cannot demand a skin-display “for health reasons”.

VII Coda

“The future will not dress us; it will colour us from inside.”

Huanca pigment shows that the body can be poster and radar—a display that needs no screen.
But every chromatic bit exposed is a vital pulse somebody can monetise.
Before you rub on the glitch cream, decide: do you want to become a canvas, or keep the opacity still left under your epidermis?
