Hyperobject CO₂ ≠ God: decoding the atmosphere as a planetary NPC
I CO₂ is not a god—it is a stubborn NPC
Timothy Morton defines hyperobjects as entities so vast in time-space that they escape direct experience: you think they are not there, and they run through everything.
Carbon dioxide is the fetish example; some activists invoke it as a vengeful divinity (“the atmosphere punishes”), others as a demon (“kill the CO₂”).
Both readings fail: CO₂ neither judges nor conspires; it behaves like an NPC (non-player character) with minimal AI and a single script:
if (combustion == 1) spawn_self(+1); if (vegetation == 1) despawn_self(-1);
“It does not argue, it does not forgive, it does not change the script if you cry.”
II How a hyperobject-NPC speaks
| In-game parameter | Human input | CO₂-NPC output | Response delay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fossil fuels burned | +7 Gt C/year | +3 ppm / year | ~3 months atmospheric |
| Forests felled | 5 M ha | +0.8 ppm | Hours (fire) → decades (soil) |
| DAC capture* | 1 Mt | –0.00013 ppm | Instant, irrelevant at macro scale |
| Global economic shutdown** | –5 % consumption | –0.5 ppm | 8-12 months |
* Direct Air Capture as of 2026.
** A 2020-style crisis model, updated.
The CO₂-NPC only adjusts a status bar; it unlocks no cutscenes, it drops no epic loot. It is boring–omnipresent.
III Equation of hyper-NPC indifference
Where every term is a flow in GtC/year.
The NPC does not “negotiate” coefficients of morality; it only adds and subtracts.
IV Dialogue ritualsafe
-
01
Breathe in front of a lit candle for 60 s.
-
02
Work out your contribution ≈ 8 mg CO₂/exhalation × 12 breaths.
-
03
Blow the candle out, plant micro-shoots in a jar; 5 days → photosynthesis will absorb ~2 mg.
-
04
Feel the moral latency: your exhalation will clear the debt in 6 breaths, the candle will take days.
V Common errors of CO₂ faith
| Dogma | Why it is false | The “NPC” correction |
|---|---|---|
| “If we stop flying, 350 ppm comes back soon.” | Inertial forcing runs ~30-50 years | You need afforestation + mineralisation at once |
| “Large-scale DAC will save civilisation.” | It would need 10 TW of extra electricity | Cut the flows before subsidising DAC |
| “Offset it and forget it.” | A planted forest can burn | The NPC verifier does not sign off an “eternal offset” |
VI Can the NPC be hacked?
- Temporal buffer — Inject CO₂ into basalts → the NPC loses the token for 100 k years.
- Atmospheric shader — Sulphurous aerosols lower T° but subtract no ppm: a visual bug.
- Overclock the vegetation — RuBisCO-3× bioengineering; risk of an ecological glitch.
None is patch enough without nerfing the base fossil fuel.
VII Coda
“Praying to CO₂ is like pleading with the law of gravity: it is indifferent to you.”
Understanding the CO₂ hyperobject as an NPC takes away the moral melodrama and leaves raw engineering:
remove spawns, raise despawns, lower petroleum's tick-rate.
Every “combustion” click is still alive three centuries later—the NPC does no speed-run and no game over: it stays, occupies atmospheric memory, slows the frames of the future.
