Insurgent bioplastic: ferments that sabotage landfills
I From the plastic tide to the subversive ferment
Landfills overflow with tonnes of polyethylene, PVC and nylon that take centuries to degrade.
Insurgent bioplastic is born out of the cooperative SCOBY Libre: fermenting organic waste with Cupriavidus necatorbacteria to generate PHA [poly-3-hydroxybutyrate] which, injected into the cracks of a dump, composts plastic and opens air tunnels for roots.
It is biology as shrapnel: a green sabotage against toxic accumulation.
“The most effective insurgency does not shout slogans: it ferments the system from inside.”
II Recipe for an insurgent polymaterial
| Ingredient | Proportion | Function | Community note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sour milk + molasses | 5 L / 500 g | Fermentable carbon source | Local supply, low cost |
| SCOBY C. necator [starter] | 50 g | PHA synthesis | Propagate via culture swaps |
| Mineral salts [Mg, Ca] | 2 g / 2 g | Enzymatic cofactors | Add with wood ash |
| Agarose 1 % [w/v] | 10 g / L | Initial fixing matrix | Dissolve in the broth beforehand |
| Filtered rainwater | 10 L | Mixing vehicle | Free community harvest |
Incubate 48 h at 30 °C with slow agitation; extract the crude PHA and mix with 10 % beeswax to mould “biodefensive sacks”.
III Formula for plastic collapse rate
- Y_{\mathrm{PHA}}
- biopolymer yield [g/L]
- D_{\mathrm{poros}}
- pore density [% vol] generated in the plastic
- T_{\mathrm{exposure}}
- time in the open air [days]
When \kappa ≥ 0.3, the landfill shows aeration fissures and the rate of plastic fragmentation rises 12 % a week.
IV Fermentative guerrillas [2025–26]
| Location | Landfill [m²] | Bioplastic applied | Visible effect [30 d] |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pune [IND] | 120 | 35 kg PHA pellets | Fissures 1–3 cm; roots penetrate |
| Medellín [COL] | 80 | 20 kg films | Fungal colonies, drainage improves |
| Naples [ITA] | 150 | 50 kg film + beeswax | Rats avoid the zones; partial degradation |
| Mexico City [Tláhuac] | 60 | 15 kg “sacks” | Air circulates; organic waste less foul |
V Ferment ritualsafe
-
01
Collect rainwater in a clean bottle.
-
02
Mix molasses + sour milk + SCOBY in a tank; cover with cloth.
-
03
Agitate 5 min every 12 h; watch for whitish foam.
-
04
After 48 h, strain the gel and mix it with melted wax.
-
05
Fill cracks in exposed plastic; mark with green spray for monitoring.
[No pathogens involved; use gloves and an FFP2 mask.]
VI Risks & countermeasures
| Danger | Symptom | Insurgent antidote |
|---|---|---|
| GMO escape [C. necator] | Proliferation off site | Kill-switch circuit [inducible araJ promoter] |
| Foul smell | Excessive fermentation | Add 1 % activated charcoal |
| Municipal repression | Eviction from the dump | Collective registry + open assembly |
| Integrity failures | Plastic does not take up the PHA | Test in vitro first, double the starter |
VII Coda
“Against plastic that clings, the ferment opens a fissure.”
The insurgent bioplastic does not claim to be a total solution, but an input for fracture: a handful of pellets is enough to break the inertia of a landfill.
Every fissure is a seed: a breath for the soil, a gesture of dissidence that turns the eternal into the ephemeral, the toxic into warm food for the earth.
