Lithium, lime and mourning songs: ghost processions on the salt pampa
I The brine sings while the salt flat dies
In the salt flats of Uyuni and Atacama, every tonne of brine evaporated also evaporates stories: Aymara communities, flamingos, the ayllusinging tradition.
The industrial ponds leave greenish crusts; to seal the cracks, the companies scatter quicklime — a substance that blinds if the wind lifts the dust.
On moonlit nights, local crews walk between the empty pools intoning machaq mara jaylli, a funeral song that records the loss; the echo bounces off mounds of lithium carbonate.
“Mining buries the future in white crusts; the voices exhume it one bar at a time every dawn.”
II Liturgical cycle of saline mourning
| Moment | Mining action | Ritual response | Symbolic effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 0 — Drilling | The pump extracts 50,000 L/h of brine | A salt mark on the cheek | The wound is “drunk” with a tear |
| Day 14 — Quicklime | 3 kg/m² scattered | An inverted helmet struck three times as a bell | Summons the water spirits ↔ lime neutralises the song |
| Day 30 — Crystallisation | A rake gathers the lithium salt | A 200 m procession, hollow drum | They count steps = litres lost |
| Month 4 — Truck to the plant | 27 t of carbonate > port | A quena holds one sustained note | Says goodbye to a lake that will never exist |

III Formula for volumetric sorrow
- L_s
- litres of brine extracted
- V_f
- nesting flamingo volume [nests × m³]
- C_{\text{cal}}
- kg of lime scattered
When \Upsilon > 10, the community declares major mourning → songs at every dusk; below 10, monthly singing.
2026: Uyuni average \Upsilon≈13.8 → mourning almost daily.
IV Community ritualsafe
-
01
Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water; add a pinch of agricultural lime.
-
02
Watch the white precipitate.
-
03
Listen to 30 s of jaylli singing [Creative Commons].
-
04
While the precipitate settles, write down a personal promise of compensation [a donation, fewer batteries, and so on].
-
05
Pour the mixture into a plant pot — return the minerals to the soil, not to the drain.
V Practices of sung mitigation
| Action | Implementation 2026 | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ritual royalty | $0.5 per kg of lithium → the “School of Song” fund | 120 children learn jaylli, cultural jobs |
| Neutral lime | Replace CaO with pre-hydrated Ca(OH)₂ | Less caustic dust; the singers keep their sight |
| Sonic memorial NFT | A song is recorded for every tonne; the NFT purchase pays for return water | 4 ML of water reinjected into the Pastos Grandes lagoon |
VI Risks & back doors
| Risk | Symptom | Necropolitical response |
|---|---|---|
| Cultural vampirism | A brand records the song for an EV advert | CC-BY-NC-SA licence, anti-branding clause |
| Calcareous greenwashing | The company paints lime-green murals | Independent Ca/pH audit, public report |
| Sonic censorship | A drone disperses the procession | Passive jammer [salt reflector] + IPFS streaming |
VII Coda
“Lithium feeds batteries, lime whitens the wound; only the song keeps the debt alive.”
We export silence inside every rechargeable cell; the real price is decibels nobody hears out on the pampa any more.
Remembering it — and demanding a water royalty, caustic reduction, audible memory — is planting a microphone in the crust, letting the salt sing its own elegy until the market listens… or the battery discharges for the last time.
