Marx after Mars: surplus value in a 0.6 kPa atmosphere
I The factory climbs to the crater
The “Martian mode of production” already exists in sketches from SpaceX, CNSA and DAO-asteroid consortia: regolith printers, algal farms, can-t robots (can't breathe).
Base Aurora-9 (Valles Marineris) houses 34 technicians and 71 robots: it harvests water-ice, refines perchlorates → oxygen.
The question: where does surplus value nest when the human worker is the most expensive good on the red planet?
“On Mars, air is a commodity; breathing costs a day and a half's work.”
II Table of Martian costs (2026)
| Factor | $/kg in the Arsia crater | Composition of the value | Marxist note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human labour | $37,000/month | Transport 70 % · Life support 25 % · Wage 5 % | The minimum wage is a tiny fraction |
| Solar kWh (Si panel) | $0.82 | Bot maintenance 40 % · Depreciation 60 % | Crystallised past labour |
| 1 kg of biopolymer (regolith + H₂O) | $96 | Energy 55 % · Robotmachine 40 % · Human labour 5 % | Generates exchangeable surplus |
| Litre of breathable O₂ | $12 | Solar energy 80 % · Membrane depreciation 15 % | Air as “surplus product” |
III Equation of Martian surplus value
- S_r
- robotic surplus labour (hours × power)
- S_e
- energetic surplus labour (ownerless kWh)
- L_h
- human labour power (hours)
At Aurora-9, S_r ≫ L_h, ergo — surplus value is extracted from panels and bots, but realised by selling O₂ and seismic data to the Earth-market; humans capture 5 % of the value, the rest returns to orbital capital.
IV Class-struggle scenarios at 0.38 g
| Faction | Demand | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Martian technosoviets | Index the wage to the log of kWh generated | DAO-Sov-Mars, one vote per hash-rate |
| Robot-Councils | Copyleft firmware, production pauses if oxygen < social debt | A community smart-kill-switch |
| Orbital Capital | Air-water patents, 10 % rent | Amended UN-OuterSpace treaties, LEO lobbying |
V Ritual of extraterrestrial econometricssafe
-
01
Work out the cost of your air: divide your monthly spending by the litres of O₂ you breathe (≈ 550 L/day).
-
02
Multiply ×12 (months).
-
03
Compare it with the Martian $12 /L — cheaper? Reflect on atmospheric privilege.
VI Strategies for socialising oxygen
| Model | Mechanics | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Common-Air Commune | An O₂ pool tokenises litres; equal shares per hour alive | Whoever hacks the sensor hoards it |
| Oxidian tax | 20 % of every polymer printed is paid in free O₂ | Slows fast production |
| Solar-Panel Union | Collective ownership of the arrays; photons for rent | Needs physical defence against orbital capital |
VII Coda
“Marx did not foresee paying to breathe, but capital did foresee charging for it.”
On Mars, surplus value no longer disguises its origin: air, light and software are the flesh of exploitation.
The next workers' revolution will not seize factories: it will seize air algorithms.
Because where the price of oxygen matches the wage, the classic slogan gets rewritten:
Worker, claim your atmosphere!
