Mushroom DAO: a tokenised mycelial economy
I Mycelium as a balance sheet
Anna Tsing showed how the Matsutake mushroom thrives in ruined landscapes, weaving a network that shares out nutrients with no centre and no owner.
In 2026, agro-crypto collectives on the Gulf of Tehuantepec translate that logic onto a blockchain: the Mushroom DAOis born—a treasury governed by spore-tokens that are only minted when the mycelium digests cardboard, bagasse or oxidised plastic.
Waste capitalism → living currency.
“The balance sheet smells of compost and beats at 17 kB/s over a LoRa mesh.”
II The biocryptic circuit
| Stage | Fungal-technological actor | On-chain result |
|---|---|---|
| Digestion | Pleurotus mycelium inoculates cardboard | CO₂ sensor ↑ 30 ppm ⇒ the oracle fires mint()
|
| Fruiting | 5 cm mushrooms sprout | An NFT “Fruiting #457” appears; redemption = 1 kg fresh |
| Recirculation | The spent substrate is sold to a worm farm | Transfer SporeToken to the worm farmer |
| Compost→ Energy | Biogas feeds a GPU minihub | 30 % of the hash-rent returns to the DAO treasury |
(No reproducible code; a conceptual cartography only.)
III Formula for spore issuance
- \alpha
- lab conversion coef. (≈ 0.42)
- \Delta CO_2
- ppm increase in the chamber
- \Delta H_2O
- humidity released
- t
- hours of digestion
When T_{\text{mint}} ≥ 1 the function mint_spore() creates exactly 1 SporeToken; no digestion, no issuance ⇒ a token backed by controlled putrefaction.
IV Mycelial governance
| Vote | Method | Tsing's reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| “Hypha signal” | A humidity hash < 40 % grants the right to propose irrigation | Need drives the agenda |
| “Spore quorum” | 10 % of supply locked for 48 h to approve upgrades | Slows hard forks – a fungal tempo |
| “Fruit dividend” | Each NFT redeemed burns 1 SporeToken | Caps inflation, encourages a real harvest |
V Field cases (2025-26)
| Location | Substrate | Token issuance | Social impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chiapas | Mezcal agave bagasse | 12 k Spore/year | Local sweet-makers replace cane sugar |
| Detroit | Sawdust + coffee waste | 5 k Spore | Work for ex-car workers, gourmet mushrooms |
| Jakarta | Oxo-bio plastic + rice husk | 18 k Spore | Natural insecticides supply the urban allotments |
VI Risks and antidotes
| Danger | Symptom | DAO antidote |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunistic fungus | Contaminates the room, false mint | CO₂ oracle + DNA barcoding |
| Speculation | A whale buys 40 % of supply | Mycelial tax: 10 % fee above > 5 % of supply |
| Humidity-data leak | LoRa sensor spoof | A secondary RFID channel weighing the substrate |
VII Initiation ritualsafe
-
01
Gather used cardboard, dampen it.
-
02
Inoculate oyster mycelium; seal in a ventilated bag.
-
03
Every CO₂ bubble is a silent “vote”: watch for 10 d.
-
04
When a mushroom sprouts, picture a +1 balance in your moral wallet.
VIII Coda
“A DAO that does not smell of soil is pure vapour.”
The Mushroom DAO shows that a blockchain need not be a kilowatt-eating silicon tower: it can be a damp excrescence that composts rubbish, feeds people and encrypts trust in living filaments.
If any currency survives the electrical collapse, it will be the one that grows in the shade, slow, silent, following laws written long before the first genesis block: eat death, give back life.
