Neural surpluss value: the new dopamine factory
I From the assembly line to the infinite feed
For Marx, surplus value appears when the worker generates more value than the wage returns.
In 2026 the worker no longer only types— their limbic system pumps dopamine that platforms bottle as minutes of retention and sell to advertisers.
The scroll is the new conveyor belt; the thumb = servo-motor; the exhausted frontal lobe = a broken machine, replaceable.
“Capital stopped squeezing muscle: now it milks neurotransmitters.”
II Accounting for industrial dopamine
| Variable | Metric | Mean user value 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| D_g – Dopamine generated | nM / h in front of the screen | 2.4 nM |
| D_c – Neural consumption | nM / h (processing the feed) | 1.9 nM |
| D_\Delta – Exportable surplus | D_g – D_c | 0.5 nM |
The platform captures D_\Delta as extra seconds of dwell time; every 0.1 nM ≈ 3 s of monetisable attention.
III Equation of neural surplus value
- CPM
- revenue per thousand impressions (USD)
- S_h
- user's hourly wage (where one exists; creators)
For a scrolling zombie with no wage, S_h=0 ⇒ \Pi_N \to \infty.
Capital has achieved its fantasy: surplus value with no wage.
IV The dopaminergic production chain
- Design lab - Neuromarketing tunes the colours + 0.6 s micro-loops.
- Extractor - The feed algorithm reads micro-signals (pupil, tilt).
- Refinery - The data warehouse packages “high engagement” patterns.
- Spot market - The advertiser pays at auction in 42 ms.
- Waste - Fatigue, FOMO, chronophages (T15).
Worker = user; machine = front camera; factory = GPU cluster.
V Ritual of subtractionsafe
-
01
Switch on monochrome + Aeroplane Mode for 30 min.
-
02
Note the urges to unlock (ticks/min).
-
03
Each urge = an attempt to capture D_\Delta.
-
04
Practise for 5 days; look for a drop of ≥ 40 % in ticks: the sign that you are dismantling the assembly line.
VI The limbocentric union – first shoots
| Action | Mechanics | Result 2025-26 |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll blockade | An extension pauses the feed 20 s every 2 min | Users lose 4′ / h, revenue drops 8 % |
| Micro-royalty | The platform pays 0.005 ¢ / s of attention | The “FairScroll” pilot in Argentina, tiny payments but real |
| Dopamine Copyleft | Licence: no extraction without a 50 % share | No adoption yet, the legal basis is under debate in the EU |
VII Coda
“If your thumb moves for free, somebody is billing for it.”
Neural surpluss value exposes capital's final phase: making money while the worker believes they are resting.
Dismantling this invisible factory demands a biochemical union and the disciplining of the feed the way the chimney was disciplined long ago.
Until then, every swipe adds nM to somebody else's books.
