Post-work: basic income, bots and enforced leisure
I Twilight of the alarm clock
The clock that drags us out of bed was born with the factory. When the assembly line goes digital and robots watch the night shift, the alarm clock becomes a relic in an industrial museum.
In 2025 automation is grazing the skin of trades that were untouchable —copywriters, translators, illustrators— thanks to generative AI; meanwhile exoskeletons and collaborative arms finish emptying the last niches of the human factory. The “post-work” horizon is no longer a futurist manifesto: it is a metallic echo you can hear in the HR corridor.
II Three turbines demolishing the eight-hour day
-
Omnipresent generative AI
Multimodal models deliver advertising campaigns in minutes, cover football matches with synthetic reports and dub voices into 40 languages. “Mid-level cognitive work” loses its price at the rate the prompt gains value. -
Robotisation of services
Kitchen cobots in franchises, security drones in warehouses, hospitality kiosks replacing receptionists: catering and logistics are living their Ford moment. -
The algorithmic attention economy
Platforms that pay —miserable— cents per scroll offer unlimited distraction, eroding classic labour discipline and shaping the audience as a passive prosumer.
III Basic income designs in dispute
| Model | Summary | Green light / red flags |
|---|---|---|
| Universal unconditional | A fixed sum for every citizen, no requirements. | Absolute simplicity, a very high fiscal cost; risk of inflation in rent and land. |
| Conditional (negative income tax) | A balance is transferred if your income falls below a threshold. | It targets the spending; it perpetuates the bureaucracy UBI meant to abolish. |
| Tokenised / crypto-distribution | A government DAO issues monthly stable-tokens; full traceability. | Minimal fraud margins; unease about financial surveillance. |
| Green UBI | It is paid out of dividends from captured carbon or surplus renewable energy. | It aligns climate incentives; it depends on volatile markets. |
The question is not “whether” but “when” and “with what architecture” we finance the collapse of the payroll.
IV Enforced leisure: the B-side of paradise without work
- Identity dispossession — In cultures where work defines status and purpose, UBI can feel like existential alms.
- Data proletariat — The unemployed train AI with badly paid micro-tasks: click-work that keeps the machine running and perpetuates the asymmetry.
- Cultural segmentation — Whoever turns their income into learning, art or enterprise rises; whoever pours it into digital anaesthesia stays trapped in a dopamine bubble.
- Algorithmic panopticon — Digitalised state income makes it easy to revoke payment instantly in the face of political dissent.
V Scenarios 2035
-
Keynesian swing
Partial basic income, 20 h working weeks, “social work” programmes to sustain meaning and community fabric. -
Tokenised cloud-city
A charter city that pays UBI in stablecoins tied to AI taxes; every citizen votes on-chain on urban upgrades. -
Ludic apartheid
The fittest 10 % enjoy hyper-paid creative jobs; the rest get a digital pension and inhabit subsidised metaverses: a country of captive gamers.
VI Manual of critical transition
-
01
Antifragile education
Learning to frame questions, not answers. Prompt-literacy and a critical eye for data as essential literacy. -
02
Bot-human cooperatives
Communities that own their own AI stack; shared benefits, not outsourced to Big Tech. -
03
A bank of time and care
UBI can free up hours to support childhood, old age and ecosystems: organising that energy is the key to leisure not being empty. -
04
A “reversible bridge” mechanism
Make it easy to move in and out of paid employment: whoever returns to the market loses neither security nor cover, which cuts the fear of the leap.
VII Coda: work to live, or live to reprogram life?
“When the factory clock stops, the engineering of desire begins.”
Post-work guarantees no emancipation; it offers a canvas.
We can let the cloth get stained with addictive video games and micro-sachets of crypto-propaganda, or paint knowledge cooperatives, symbiosis with AI and care networks that turn the income into a capital of shared time.
Acceleration pulverises the working day; politics will decide whether the dust becomes asphalt or toxic fog.
