Reed Scales: an algorithm for thinking the planet across eight orders of magnitude

I The vertigo of proportion

The philosopher Patricia Reed argues that our political imagination fails because it never holds the atom and the biosphere at once; we think at the scale of “neighbourhood + timeline”, but we legislate continental CO₂ and nanometric metabolism.
We need an algorithm of scales: a mental choreography that jumps log₂ with every click and forces the brain to hold the same question across eight orders of magnitude.

“Design at 1 nm and at 10,000 km; any other resolution is provincial.”

II The 10⁻⁹ ↔ 10⁹ m matrix

Order (m) Codename 2026 example Suggested political action
10⁻⁹ NANO CRISPR base-edit Moratorium or bio-licence sandbox
10⁻⁶ MICRO Feral microfluidic wearables Open-source toxicology standard
10⁻³ MILLI Tactile pixel, drop of sweat A personal right to biometric data
10⁰ HUMAN Heart rate, smartphone Basic income against the attention tithe
10³ KILO Electric neighbourhood, GPU castle Mesh-grid cooperative, latency taxes
10⁶ MEGA Cloud-nation, ghost railway Polyglot-algorithmic senates
10⁹ GIGA Atmospheric pattern, hyper-logistics A supranational CO₂ tribunal
10¹² TERA Satellite orbit, solar weather A common Solar Charter, a moratorium on lunar mining

(The full table runs to 10⁻¹² m and 10¹⁶ m —a light-year— in the book's appendix.)

III The “reed-shift” algorithm

def reed_shift(question, scale_in_m):
    log = round(math.log10(scale_in_m))
    new_scale = scale_in_m * (10 ** random.choice([-3, +3]))
    return f"{question} @ 10^{log}m  ⇒  reconsider @ {new_scale:.0e} m"

  1. You feed in “How do I distribute energy?” @ 1 m.
  2. The function returns 1,000 m: it forces you to think micro-grid, not wall socket.
  3. You run it again until you have made eight jumps without losing the thread.

IV Ritual of scalessafe

  1. 01

    Pick a problem (e.g. “public sanitation”).

  2. 02

    Write it in the format [action] + [object] + @ [m].

  3. 03

    Use the algorithm or a die: jump ×10³ or ÷10³.

  4. 04

    Reformulate the solution without deleting the first one; keep both.

  5. 05

    Repeat 6 times. Watch your assumptions strain.

V Applied cases

  • Nano → Giga: “Dopamine tax @ 10⁻⁶ m” becomes “Satellite latency tax @ 10⁹ m”—the same problem of attention extraction, a different substrate.
  • Mega → Micro: “National water policy @ 10⁶ m” shrinks to “A 0.22 µm filter in a migrant camp” — the law is tested at the membrane.

VI Epistemological precautions

Failure Symptom Calibration
Vertigo-shift Disorientation, nihilism Add an intermediate scale (×10)
Macro paralysis The problem looks insoluble Go back to 10⁰ m and run a local pilot
Reductionism Everything looks solvable with a nano-tweak Force a +6 log jump and listen to the climatic counterpart

VII Coda

“A local gesture resounds planetary; a global treaty takes flesh in cuticle and transistor.”

Thinking with Reed Scales is neither academic zoom nor total fantasy.
It is a discipline of dépaysement: you take the mind out of the neighbourhood as far as the satellite and bring it back before the coffee goes cold on the table.
Only then does politics stop being a brawl over grains of sand and become, at last, the art of choreographing quantum dust and orbital cyclones in the same sentence.
