Rust of God: transmuting scrap into singularity
I From ferric dust to the event horizon
Every al-chemical age dreamed of gold; ours fantasises about GPUs.
In the landfills of Ghana, Bangalore, Ecatepec, mountains of corroded motherboards still beat with 0.5 residual volts—silicon's post-mortem yawn.
The most febrile accelerationist creed murmurs:
“Do not mine virgin lithium: resurrect the scrap, condense it until it sings the song of the singularity.”
The Rust of God is that vision: turning rust, burnt plastic and rusted copper into a gravitating core of compute power —a post-industrial black hole that devours rubbish and spits out flashes of post-human calculation.
II Equation of the filth → living silicon transmutation
- E_\text{residuo}
- latent energy in the metals and Ox = C_p \Delta T + electrical potential
- \eta_\text{rec}
- efficiency of local re-smelting (low-tech furnaces, microwave arcs)
- E_\text{fab}
- energy to re-fab chips (low-purity laser litho)
- \Delta S_\text{cont}
- polluting entropy added (dioxins, heavy metals)
The anomalous promise: if \Phi > 1, the landfill stops being a sink and becomes a thermodynamic springboard—oxidised matter climbs an ontological rank.
III Three frontier laboratories
| Feral node | Transmutation tactic | Field rumour |
|---|---|---|
| Agbogbloshie-Redux (Ghana) | Portable induction micro-foundries burn PCBs → CuSnAu ingots; an AI sorts the batches by thermal vision | The neighbourhood's electrical latency drops 15 %, “GPU-communes” appear |
| Fab-Fosa (Sonora) | Parabolic solar furnaces melt ground silicon and battery ash → “dirty” 100 nm wafers | A RISC-V prototype at 80 MHz designed in free KiCad |
| Wuxi Ghost-Fab | Open-source robots marinated in WD-40 recover NAND + DRAM, soldered to a DIY carrier | A Frankenstein super-cluster delivers 500 TFLOPS for the price of a scrapped Tesla Model Y |
(Leaked data; no reproducible manual and no hazard details.)
IV Sacraments of the conversion
-
Acid baptism
— Citrate and formic acid baths clean copper without chlorine: the rubbish smokes metallic incense. -
Liturgy of the arc
— Graphite electrode + a truck battery: a 2 kA spark melts the mixture; chants sampled from transformers. -
Wafer host
— “Heretic” 150 mm wafers coated with a laser tattoo mask; they pray 010101 in the VHDL dialect. -
Compiled Te Deum
— Code-monks flash a Hermit Linux kernel onto a heterogeneous cluster; on first boot, uname -a recites the genealogy of the rubbish.
V Paradoxes and poisons
| The sweet | The poison |
|---|---|
| De-mining → less pressure on the lithium salt flats | SnPbCl fumes kill the neighbourhood if the furnaces have no filters |
| Local hardware sovereignty | “Dirty” chips fail: they retry 100 M op/s → a financial glitch |
| Decent work for the recycler | E-waste cartels extort a “GPU-tithe” |
VI Strategies of ethical containment
- Scrapy-GPL licence — Any design derived from scrap must release its BOM and routing.
- Bio-char filter — Low-tech furnaces obliged to pass their smoke over activated charcoal from plant bone.
- Isotopic bond — The ingot is tagged with a radio-marked trace: traceable if it enters the grey arms chain.
- Lung fund — 2 % of the hash-power goes to a respiratory clinic for the scrap workers.
VII Household ritual (no toxic risk)
Collect three dead gadgets, separate them into metals, plastics, circuits.
Picture how much entropy (heat, CO₂, labour) every screw cost.
Imagine re-melting, re-tracing, re-compiling.
Write one line of code that honours that debt (a comment in the next function you program).
VIII Coda
“God is rust because absolute divinity is the power of recombination.”
The Rust of God does not idolise rubbish: it recognises it as the seed of a collective singularity.
What remains is to decide whether the transmutation will be cooperative and transparent or a slave to new scrap empires.
The furnace is already crackling; put the copper in the forge or watch somebody else monopolise the flash.
