Sonic hyperobject: when Morton vibrates to Zorn's beat
I An object too big to fit in an ear
Timothy Morton called any phenomenon that stretches through time and space beyond human perception a hyperobject —CO₂, capitalism, polar melt.
John Zorn fires noise-jazz polyrhythms so fast that no pattern lets itself be caught.
What happens if we listen to the CO₂-planet as though it were a Zorn score?
The sonic hyperobjectis born: an acoustic mass that never finishes revealing itself, a mutant drone whose bar folds over and evades the metre.
“The ice cracks in 13/8, the jungle breathes in 5/7, your heartbeat comes in late… and the object still does not fit.”
II Synthesiser of the colossus
| Component | Data source | Musical translation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atm. CO₂ (ppm) | NOAA weekly | Base pitch (Hz) = 200 + (ppm-400) | A drone that rises 1 cent every 0.1 ppm |
| Global temperature (°C anomaly) | Copernicus | Distortion drive (%) | Crunchy saturation ≈ temperature |
| Deforestation rate (ha/day) | FAO | BPM of the percussion burst | Frantic break-beats |
| Twitter anxiety index | Sentiment API | High-pass filter Q | A sharp / muffled sound |
(The code runs locally; no public API.)
III Formula for audible density
- D_i(t)
- data layer translated into dB
- w_i
- perceptual weight (0–1)
When H(t) > 90 \text{dB}, the hyperobject turns physically unpleasant: climatic realism made noise.
IV Concert-ritual (a proposal)
-
01
A dark room, 8.1 speakers surrounding the audience.
-
02
Intro: a low drone at 401 ppm, a 220 Hz sine.
-
03
Every minute, a script scrapes NOAA → adjusts the pitch.
-
04
A saxophone improvises atonal scales (Zorn mode) every time deforestation > 1,000 ha.
-
05
The strobe fires when the anxiety index > 0 — one pulse per 10,000 anguished tweets.
The result: 45 min in which the Earth plays its anguish through human eardrums.
V Household ritualsafe
-
01
Open an online tone generator.
-
02
Set it to 420 Hz (approximate CO₂).
-
03
Raise it 1 Hz with every breath for 10 min.
-
04
Notice when your body asks for silence: that discomfort is the hyperobject entering your audible band.
VI Risks & antidotes
| Danger | Symptom | Countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Sensory overload | Nausea, stress | Headphones with a low-pass filter; step out for 60 s |
| Catastrophe fetishism | Enjoying only the sonic chaos | Add a hope channel: the frequency drops when reforested areas ↑ |
| Corporate co-op | A brand uses the piece for “green-washing” | CC-BY-NC-SA licence + anti-branding clause |
VII Coda
“The hyperobject fits in no song; but if you do not listen to it, it will sing over your ruins.”
Putting CO₂ in Zorn's key will not stop the warming, but it wears away the indifference.
Because a graph can be ignored; a planetary tinnitus drills through any cynic's nap.
