The agent that opens your mail
Movement 1 · The Brain — September 2026
I The difference in kind
On 8 September 2026 an agent with its own virtual machine was launched. It opens applications, browses, fills in forms, buys.
An assistant that suggests leaves the decision where it was. An agent that executes moves it somewhere else, and that is the change in kind [not the quality of its answers].
The loop is not new. It is Wiener's, turned inside out.
II Nine days, counted
| Day | What it did | What changed in me |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | chased up a wrongly issued invoice | a tone I could not have held |
| 3 | cancelled two fourteen-month subscriptions | eighty-six euros a year |
| 6 | morning summary before I opened the mail | I stopped knowing what had arrived |
| 9 | switched off | a week not feeling up to date with my own life |
Day six is the one that matters; I did not know what had arrived, I knew what I had been told was arriving. The system receives information, compares it against a target and adjusts. The target is set by someone else, and what it adjusts is what I see.
“A summary is a decision about what you are not going to read.”
III Why distribution is the asset
The company that launched that agent is not competing on having the best model. It is competing with something that cannot be bought: identity, social graph, messaging and the daily habit of billions of people.
The founder of the company that fed models with labelled data went on to run its superintelligence lab. First he learned how an intelligence gets fed; then he was handed the human ecosystem where that intelligence lives.
IV Permissions before you hand over the inbox [safe]
- A card with a low ceiling and an expiry date, never your main one.
- A whitelist of recipients for anything sent in your name.
- An action log outside the agent, readable by you.
- Nothing irreversible without confirmation: send, publish, buy, delete.
- A week's trial and an honest review of what you stopped looking at.
V Risks
The obvious risk is the expensive mistake. The real risk is duller [and turns up in no complaint]: atrophy. Delegating the inbox does not free up attention, it reassigns it, and what you lose is not time but direct contact with what is happening to you.
There is also a liability problem. If the agent enters into a contract, the person who never saw the operation answers for it; the machine has no assets, no address, nothing to seize [and no name on the contract].
VI Coda
I switched it off on day nine, and not out of fear.
My life was more up to date than ever and I had spent a week not being up to date with my life. Both sentences are true at once, and the business lives inside that contradiction.
