Whale Mesh against corporate sonar: cetacean networks to sabotage industrial noise
I When whale song is drowned out
Whales emit low-frequency songs [10–30 Hz] to communicate across kilometres.
Ocean and oil fleets, with their active sonar [2–20 kHz], deafen that conversation and disorient marine populations.
Whale Mesh proposes deploying bidirectional buoys that pick up the song and rebroadcast it on free bands, generating an acoustic mesh where the fauna recovers sonic space and corporate sonar is forced either to give up frequency or be exposed.
“If the whale cannot hear its neighbour, the ecosystem becomes a graveyard of echoes.”
II Cetacean-radial architecture
| Component | Hardware / ritual | Function | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Nerthus” buoys | Piezo hydrophone + LoRa-WAN | Captures the song and mesh-rebroadcasts it | 10–30 Hz |
| “Sperm Whale” repeater | Marine ASV drone + speaker | Reinforces acoustic dead zones | 15 kHz |
| “Orca” node | Edge GPU on the buoy | Filters industrial noise [FFT] | 2–20 kHz |
| Remote panel | WebGL dashboard | Maps interference zones | Real time |
[Solar buoys, bio-PVC flotation; decentralised network, GPL-3 software.]
III Formula for community resonance
- A_i
- song amplitude at buoy i
- d_i
- distance between buoys [km]
- \lambda
- acoustic attenuation coefficient [~1 km]
- N_s
- number of industrial sources*
When \mathcal{R} ≥ 0.7, the mesh recovers intelligibility of 70 % or more of the song against the background noise.
IV “Gulf of Mexico” pilot 2026
| Metric | Without Whale Mesh | With Whale Mesh | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interference index [%] | 82 | 18 | ↓ 64 pp |
| Orca detections per hour | 1.2 | 4.7 | +291 % |
| Acoustic dead zones [km²] | 1,200 | 340 | ↓ 72 % |
| Illegal sonar deployed | Hidden | Exposed [45 events] | — |
The coastal community alerted the authorities: illegal sonar no longer operates in the shadows.

-
01
Download the app WhaleMesh Lite.
-
02
Put your phone in flight mode by the shore for 10 min.
-
03
Record ambient audio with
rec -r 44100 -c1. -
04
Upload the WAV to the dashboard → view the spectrogram.
-
05
If you spot a 10–30 Hz peak, raise a community alert over LoRa → the “Orca” node activates.
VI Risks & countermeasures
| Danger | Symptom | Mesh response |
|---|---|---|
| Naval repression | Buoys intercepted and destroyed | Biodegradable design, “self-retreat” prospect |
| Industrial spoofing | Synthetic sounds imitate the song | ML trained on genuine vocalisations, orca whitelist |
| Maritime data leak | Buoy GPS exposed to a surveillance drone | Mesh onion routing, geographic anonymity |
VII Coda
“The mesh that holds up the ocean is the one that listens first.”
Whale Mesh shows that bioacoustics can be infrastructure of resistance:
it does not only preserve the ancestral song, it reveals those trying to bury the sea's voice under the echo of their own greed.
The sound mesh is a collective oath: as long as one node is alive, there is hope of a sea that sings without chains.
