Zorn's Law: polyrhythm as a diagram of power
I Politics also stings in 13/16
John Zorn composes pieces that mutate their metre every bar: 7/8 → 5/4 → 11/16, abrupt cuts, violent silences.
On the street in 2026 the demonstration beats the same way: the student bloc at 120 BPM, police marching at 90 BPM, copwatch traders firing a sampler at 180 BPM; the mix makes a polyrhythm of conflict.
I propose Zorn's Law:
“Whoever masters the cut controls the conjuncture; whoever imposes the bar dictates the distribution of adrenaline.”
II Score of the protest – the 3 June case, Santiago
| Minute | Actor / metre | Sonic action | Street result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 00-02 | Drum bloc, 7/8 | Irregular snare | The carabineros lose the thread |
| 03-05 | Police step, 4/4 | Bass drum of shield-and-baton | The march orders the space |
| 06-07 | Streamer horn, 13/16 | Glitch siren | The feed pushes up the gas odds |
| 08-10 | The crowd chants in 5/4 | “There is no latency!” | A shared stride → a human wall |
The cut at 06:30 (the 13/16 siren) knocked the 4/4 police out of line, opened a flank; the demonstrators turned 90°.
Metric control ≈ topological control.
III Formula for photons per bar
- E_{\text{corte}}
- sonic energy (dB) at the new metric moment
- \Delta T
- time between metres
- R_{\text{desfase}}
- no. of actors who fail to adapt their step
If P ≥ 1 → a chaotic instant, useful to whoever called the beat.
IV Tactical-rhythmic rituals (safe)
-
01
Inverse metronome: Group A walks at 120 BPM, group B at 90 BPM → a natural funnel at the crossing.
-
02
Sudden silence: Cut the megaphone exactly on beat 1 → the riot squad loses its auditory bearings.
-
03
Asynchronous cascade: Staggered choruses 3/4–4/4–5/4 invert the urban echo → it confuses the acoustic drones.
(Legal; no call to violence.)
V The State's counter-rhythm
| Strategy | Execution | Achilles heel |
|---|---|---|
| Tempo-reset grenade | A 120 dB stun bomb normalises everything to 4/4 | Earplugs + a 7/8 drum takes the chaos back |
| Robotic metatron | An AI loudspeaker adjusts its commands in adaptive polyrhythm | It introduces 180 ms of latency; easy to sabotage by RF |
VI Coda
“Power beats; to revolutionise is to desynchronise.”
Zorn teaches: the note is not frightening—the cut is.
Whoever learns to insert bar amputations into the social weave will command the seconds in which the street is an empty score ready for a new leitmotiv.
Next beat: learn to listen before you hammer.
