Description

Black published the option pricing formula with Scholes in the Journal of Political Economy in May 1973; he died in 1995, two years before the Nobel awarded for that work, which is not given to the dead. The print is two payoff curves converging at an elbow.

Before the formula, an option was sold by negotiation. After it, an option was calculated: five variables, one of them volatility, and a number that comes out the same for everyone who types it in.

That made possible a market that did not exist, because what allows trading at scale is not agreement about value, it is agreement about procedure. Two years after publication, calculators with the model burned into them were on sale on the Chicago floor.

The formula assumes large jumps are nearly impossible. Mandelbrot had already shown they were not. Scholes and Merton received the Nobel in 1997 and the following year the fund they ran collapsed precisely where the model was not looking.

Black had died in 1995. The prize is not awarded to the dead, so the only one of the three who never saw it was the one whose name it carries.
