Description

Phage therapy began in 1919 and went on being used in eastern Europe while the west bet on antibiotics; it is coming back now that these are failing. Printed here is the structure of the phage perched on the bacterial wall.

Exploration

A bacteriophage perches on the bacterium's wall with its fibres, punctures it and injects its genome. The bacterium makes hundreds of copies and bursts.

The specificity is extreme: each phage attacks a few strains and does not touch the rest of the flora. That is its advantage over a broad-spectrum antibiotic and also its practical difficulty.

The patient's bacterium has to be isolated and the phage that kills it found in a collection, or collected from a sewer. The treatment is composed for each case.

In Georgia and in Russia it went on being used throughout the cold war, while the west bet entirely on antibiotics. The data from then are not in the format the agencies ask for today.

It multiplies inside the patient as long as there is a target and disappears when it runs out. A medicine that manufactures itself does not fit the concept of a dose.
