Description

Ballard held in 1962 that catastrophe does not interrupt the project but is its destination, and that the territory to be explored was inner space. Printed here is that rocket pointing inwards.

Exploration

A rocket with its nose turned inwards. Ballard wrote it in 1962, in an article where he held that science fiction had spent decades exploring the wrong planet.

The territory to be mapped was not outer space but inner: the zone where the world outside and the world inside meet and are confused with each other.

The forecast was of an uncomfortable precision. The lunar programme ended in 1972 and nobody went back; what did arrive was the saturation of images, advertising, celebrity and the televised accident.

Catastrophe, on his reading, does not interrupt the project: it is what the project was heading for from the start, and that is why the characters do not suffer it, they look for it.

He wrote this twenty years before there were enough screens to check it.
