Description

The mould came in through the window of an unwashed laboratory and penicillin had its first clinical use in 1941. Printed here are the four strained atoms of the ring, which the bacterium opens believing it is raising its wall.

Exploration

The four-atom ring is strained. The angles it ought to have do not fit in a square, and that deformation is stored energy waiting for something to release it.

The enzyme that stitches the bacterial wall mistakes that ring for the end it is meant to stitch. It attacks it, the ring opens and the fragment is left welded to the enzyme for ever.

The bacterium goes on growing with the wall unriveted until its own internal pressure bursts it. The drug does not kill: it prevents repair while the organism kills itself.

The mould came in through a window of a London laboratory in 1928 and it was Oxford that turned it into a medicine thirteen years later.

The bacterium made an enzyme that opens the ring ahead of time. The first resistant strain was documented before the forties were out.
