Description

From 1970 Radigue worked almost exclusively with an ARP 2500 synthesiser, on pieces where nothing seems to change from one minute to the next and after an hour everything is different. The print is that slope you cannot see while it is happening.

Exploration

Radigue worked for forty years with a single synthesiser, an ARP 2500 she kept while everyone else changed equipment every season. With it she made hour-long pieces in which, listening to any two minutes, nothing appears to happen.

What happens is below the threshold at which a change is noticed. The movements are so slow that the ear does not register them as movement, and after forty minutes the sound is entirely other without anyone being able to point to the moment it stopped being the first one.

That forces a way of listening that is not the usual one, because there is nothing to follow and nothing to wait for.

She had been an assistant in Schaeffer's studio and turned away from that path. After her son's death she stopped working for years and came back with a three-hour trilogy.

From 2001 she left electronics behind and writes for instruments, composing directly with each performer, without a score.
