Description

Metastaseis, written between 1953 and 1954, traces string glissandi that are individual straight lines and together produce a curved surface; Xenakis used the same construction in the Philips pavilion. The print is that sheaf of straight lines.

Exploration

Xenakis joined the Greek resistance at twenty-one and a shard of shrapnel wrecked his face and took an eye. He was sentenced to death in absentia and left the country on false papers. He could not return while the dictatorship lasted.

In Paris he worked twelve years in Le Corbusier's studio as an engineer, calculating structures. His music came from there, not from an aesthetic idea: if you stretch a sheaf of straight lines between two edges and rotate them, the whole draws a curved surface even though each line stays straight.

That is what the glissandi of his strings do. Each instrument rises or falls in a line; what you hear is a mass bending.

The same construction is in the pavilion he designed for the Brussels exposition, in concrete.

A building and a score made with the same calculation, by someone the war had taken half a face from.
