Description

Fluoxetine arrived in 1987 and was the first commercially successful selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor; with it sadness came to be named as a chemical imbalance. Printed here are the three fluorines in a row that make it last days in the body instead of hours.

Exploration

The neuron that emits serotonin collects it again afterwards with a pump in order to use it once more. Fluoxetine plugs that pump and the neurotransmitter stays longer in the space between cells.

The block is immediate and the clinical effect takes two to four weeks. That means that what improves is not the rise in serotonin but something the brain does in response to it, and that is still not described.

The three fluorines in a row make the molecule resistant to the liver. Its active metabolite lasts one to two weeks, and that is why it is the only one of its class that can be stopped abruptly without a withdrawal syndrome.

It arrived in 1987 into a market where the earlier antidepressants killed in overdose. Its own did not.

With it the idea of sadness as a chemical imbalance was installed, which the campaign held up more firmly than the data did.
