Exploration

Four string players, each in a different helicopter, playing at the same time while circling over the city. Each one's sound is transmitted by radio to a hall where the audience hears the four signals mixed with the noise of the four rotors.

The work is in none of the four aircraft: in each helicopter there is only a player and a din. It exists solely in the mix, on the ground, in a place where nobody is playing.

The performers cannot hear each other. They follow a click through headphones and the tremolos they play are written to enter into relation with the frequency of the blades.

It premiered in Amsterdam in June 1995 and costs a fortune to stage, so it has been done rarely.

It is the most expensive piece of twentieth-century music and it consists of four people being unable to hear each other.
