Description

Guattari worked from 1955 in a clinic where the patients cooked, kept the books and decided, and where the doctors took turns washing up. He held that desire is not the lack of something but a machine that produces, and he proved it by sharing out the chores.

Exploration

At La Borde the patients cooked, kept the accounts and decided in assembly; the doctors took turns washing up. It was not occupational therapy: it was the thesis put to work, the thesis that desire is not a lack of something but a machine that produces, and that a psychiatric hospital where nobody produces anything manufactures precisely what it claims to cure.

Guattari worked there for forty years, almost his entire adult life, while he wrote everything else.

It worked at the scale of one clinic with a hundred or so people. Nobody has shown it works at any other scale, and every attempt to apply it to anything larger has ended up reinventing hierarchy through the back door. That does not invalidate it. It places it: it is proof that it was possible in one place, not a recipe.
