Description

Han described in 2010 the passage from "you must not" to "you can": the watchtower is empty because each person exploits themselves and there is no longer anyone to rebel against. Printed here is that tower.

Exploration

A watchtower in the centre and cells around it. In the original model the tower could be empty and it worked the same, because what was effective was the suspicion of a gaze.

Han holds that the tower is now empty in another way. There is nobody watching and nobody is needed either, because performance is no longer imposed: it is chosen.

The passage is from you must not to you can. The exploiter and the exploited have merged into the same person, and that is why resistance is left without an addressee.

From there he draws his thesis on the pathology of the age: while the last century was immunological, of bacteria and viruses and outside enemies, the present one produces neuronal conditions, depression, attention deficit, exhaustion.

They are not illnesses of infection. They are illnesses of a system that no longer has anyone to defend itself against.
