Description

Haraway took the borders between animal, machine and matter to be broken, and in 2016 proposed thinking in kinship rather than in descent. Printed here is that tree with nobody at the top.

Exploration

A tree with no privileged root and with nobody occupying the summit. The lines connect sideways, between species, and no position inherits from another the right to be above.

Haraway proposes replacing descent with kinship. To make kin is an act, not an inheritance, and it is done with those who share no lineage.

Biology arrived later at the same drawing. A human body carries on and inside it as many bacterial cells as its own, and without them it neither digests nor manufactures part of its vitamins.

Horizontal gene transfer between bacteria, which does not respect the line of descent, is the mechanism by which resistance to antibiotics jumps from one species to another.

The tree of life is not a tree. It is a network that also connects sideways, and that stops being a metaphor the moment you look at an infection.
