Description

Ibogaine comes from a shrub of central Africa and since 1962 it has been known that in a single dose it interrupts withdrawal for days; it also alters the rhythm of the heart, and that is why it is not approved. Printed here is the molecule and that window of days.

Exploration

Ibogaine comes from the root of a central African shrub that has been used in initiation ceremonies since before anyone analysed it.

A single dose interrupts opiate withdrawal without producing the escalation the syndrome itself demands. The effect lasts days and needs no tapering schedule, which is the opposite of how everything else works.

The body converts it into noribogaine, which stays for weeks. That long tail explains the window and also complicates any monitoring.

The problem is not arguable: it lengthens the heart's QT interval and sudden deaths have been documented, some in people with no known heart disease.

That is why it is not approved anywhere and is given in unregulated clinics, where there is no monitoring. The substance has a manageable profile in a hospital and a lethal one in a hotel room.
