Description

After ten years of screening, Stewart Adams made the first test in humans on his own hangover in 1961; ibuprofen reached the market in 1969. Printed here are the two forms of the molecule, of which the body uses only one.

Exploration

Ibuprofen also blocks COX, but it leans on it and lets go. It stops hurting when the concentration falls, some six hours later, and the stomach recovers.

The molecule has a carbon with four different substituents, so it exists in two versions that are mirror images. Only one fits the enzyme.

The tablet carries both halves. The body has an enzyme that converts the useless one into the useful one, so the dead half is used late.

Adams tried the first dose on himself before a talk, hungover, on his way to a conference in Moscow. It worked.

Ten years had passed and some six hundred compounds had been discarded before reaching that one.
