Exploration

Two chains, of twenty-one and thirty residues, stitched by three sulphur bridges. It is not made that way: it is made in one piece and then the middle stretch is cut out and discarded.

Injected under the skin, it clusters in sixes around a zinc atom and the packet has to come apart before passing into the blood. That dismantling is what delays the effect.

On reaching muscle or fat, its receptor orders the glucose transporters that were stored inside the cell out to the surface. Glucose does not enter on its own: it enters through doors that insulin orders open.

Banting sold the patent for a dollar in 1923 and said it was not his.

A century later, a vial costs in the United States what it costs, and the original molecule has been unprotected for decades.
