Description

Harington and Barger synthesised thyroxine in 1927: without iodine in the diet there is no hormone, and that is why iodine is added to salt. Printed here are the four iodines in their exact places; take one away and it is a different hormone.

Exploration

The thyroxine that is taken is not the one that works. It carries four iodines and the body removes one in the peripheral tissues to obtain the active form, which is three times more potent.

That conversion is the regulator. Each organ decides how much active hormone it wants, and that is why giving the potent form directly is worse: it takes the decision away.

Remove the iodine from the other side of the ring and out comes a molecule with no activity. The same four atoms, in different positions, give hormone or nothing.

It is absorbed badly and capriciously. Calcium, iron, coffee and soy interfere, and that is why it is taken on an empty stomach and apart from everything else.

Without iodine in the diet there is no raw material. That is why iodine is added to salt, and it is one of the cheapest public health interventions there is.
