Description

Goat's rue was used against excessive thirst and killed livestock; metformin, approved in the United States in 1995, is today the most prescribed in the world and how it works is still argued over. Printed here are its twenty atoms and five nitrogens.

Exploration

Metformin does not touch the pancreas or force insulin to be secreted. It concentrates in the liver cell and obstructs the first complex of the mitochondrion's respiratory chain.

With less energy available, the cell cannot afford to manufacture glucose, which is an expensive process. The liver stops pouring sugar into the blood for lack of budget.

The effect is the consequence of a provoked shortage, not of an order. That is why it does not produce hypoglycaemia: there is nothing pushing the sugar down if it is already low.

Goat's rue had been given against excessive thirst since the Middle Ages and killed the livestock that grazed on it in quantity.

It is the most prescribed drug in the world for type 2 diabetes and which of its effects is the main one is still argued over.
