Exploration

Morphine fits the mu receptor, which is not there for it: it is there for the body's own endorphins. On activating it, the neuron stops firing and the pain signal arrives all the same but stops mattering.

That is what separates it from an anaesthetic. The pain does not disappear, it changes rank.

The same receptor is in the brainstem, where breathing rate is decided, and in the gut, where it slows transit. Respiratory depression and constipation are not side effects: they are the same effect in other tissues.

The oxygen bridge that closes the molecule over itself makes it rigid. It cannot fold into other shapes, and that is why it enters where it enters and nowhere else.

Sertürner isolated it in 1804 and tried it on himself and on three friends. With it plants stopped being administered and molecules began to be administered.
