Description

Messenger RNA degrades by itself as soon as it enters the body; what made the vaccines possible was the fat that wraps it, approved for the first time in 2018, not the message. Printed here is that capsule with its cargo inside.

Exploration

Naked messenger RNA is of no use as a drug. The enzymes of the blood cut it within minutes and, even if it survived, it would not cross any membrane on its own.

The nanoparticle is four fats mixed with the RNA in a microfluidic channel. One of them is ionisable: neutral in the blood, it takes on a positive charge on entering the acid medium of the vesicle that has swallowed it.

That change of charge breaks the vesicle from inside and releases the message into the cytoplasm. Without that piece, the material enters the cell and dies shut in.

The problem the nanoparticle solved was not the message but the delivery. The vaccines of 2020 arrived because the vehicle was solved, not because the cargo had just been discovered.

It accumulates above all in the liver, and that is why the next things approved by this route were liver diseases. Aiming it at other organs is still unresolved.
