Exploration

In this disease a gene is missing and there is another, almost identical, spare one that could stand in for it. It is of no use because on being read a piece is skipped and the protein comes out incomplete.

Nusinersen is eighteen bases that stick right over the signal that orders that skip and cover it. The reading machinery does not see it, nothing is skipped and the protein comes out whole.

It supplies neither gene nor protein. It changes a reading instruction on material the patient already had.

A chain of eighteen bases does not cross the brain's barrier by any route. It has to be placed directly into the fluid of the spinal cord, by lumbar puncture, and repeated every four months for life.

In children treated before symptoms, many go on to walk. It is a disease that used to kill before the age of two.
