Exploration

In retinitis pigmentosa the photoreceptors die. The cells that were behind them, the ones that transmitted the signal to the optic nerve, are still alive and with nothing to transmit.

Optogenetics gives them the function they did not have. The gene for an algal protein that opens on receiving light is introduced with a virus, and a cell that only transmitted becomes one that detects.

The protein needs far more light than a human photoreceptor, so the patient wears goggles that capture the scene and reproject it amplified onto the treated retina.

In 2021 the first case was published: a man blind for decades who managed to locate and count objects on a table, only with the goggles on.

It is not restored vision. It is a band of monochrome perception that requires training, and it is still one published case, not a therapy.
