Description

An organoid is cultured human tissue that reproduces part of an organ; since the first intestinal ones, in 2009, it has allowed drugs to be tested without animals or people. Printed here is that tissue on its support.

Exploration

An organoid is obtained by placing stem cells in a gel that imitates the matrix of a tissue. They are not told what to build: they organise themselves and reproduce the architecture of the organ in miniature.

There are organoids of gut, of liver, of kidney and of brain, a few millimetres across, with the layers and the cell types in their places.

What makes them useful is not the resemblance but the origin. Cultured from a particular patient, they allow testing in the laboratory which drug works in that person before it is given.

In cystic fibrosis they are already used this way to decide treatment in mutations too rare to have a trial of their own.

They lack vascularisation and an immune system, and that is why they do not grow beyond a few millimetres or age like an organ. The brain ones have also forced an argument about from what point it is advisable to go on.
