Exploration

Nine amino acids with the two ends closed by a sulphur bridge. Du Vigneaud built it entire in 1953, the first hormone manufactured in a laboratory, and the Nobel arrived two years later.

In the uterus at term it opens calcium channels in the smooth muscle and produces a contraction that stretches the neck, and that stretching sends the order to release more. It is a loop that feeds itself and is cut only when the contents come out.

Given from outside, that loop begins without the tissue being ready. The contraction may not let go, and then the flow of blood to the placenta is interrupted.

It is given by drip and raised little by little for that reason: it is the only way to find the threshold without overshooting.

Change two of the nine amino acids and out comes vasopressin, which regulates water. Two positions separate birth from thirst.
