Exploration

Hofmann isolated and described psilocybin in 1958 from mushrooms that had been used in Mesoamerican ceremonies for centuries.

The body removes a phosphate and converts it into psilocin, which acts on the 5-HT2A receptor of the cortex. The default network, which sustains self-referential activity, lowers its coupling and regions that do not usually speak to each other are left connected.

In resistant depression that translates, according to the trials, into a window of weeks of flexibility after one or two supervised sessions.

In 1971 it was placed on the most restrictive list of the international conventions, which interrupted research for almost half a century. There was no finding that prompted it.

There are phase 2 results with a single dose and phase 3 trials under way. The molecule returning to the hospital is exactly the one from 1958.
