Description

The score for Forbidden Planet, from 1956, was the first entirely electronic score for a feature film; the Barrons built circuits, recorded them and let them burn out. The union did not recognise them as composers. The print is six of those circuits.

Exploration

The Barrons did not compose with notes. They built small electronic circuits from diagrams in a cybernetics book, fed them more current than they could take and recorded what they did while they overloaded.

The circuits died. Each had a behaviour of its own while it lasted and then burned out for good, so what stayed on the tape is the only existence each one had. They recorded the dying and left it inside the film.

The result was the first entirely electronic score for a feature film, in 1956, and it does not sound like the music of its time but like the music of thirty years later.

The musicians' union would not admit them as composers, because what they did fitted no category in the agreement. In the credits they appear under a formula invented for the occasion: electronic tonalities.

They were given no authorship credit and therefore could not be nominated for awards.
