Description

For the Stiegler of 1994 technics is pharmakon in the Greek sense: the same dose cures and poisons, and the memory that is externalised comes back weaker. Printed here is that going out and coming back.

Exploration

One arrow out and another back. Technics leaves the body taking a capacity with it, and what returns is the capacity available and the body without it.

Stiegler uses the Greek word in its double sense: pharmakon is at once the remedy and the poison, and they are not two substances but two doses of the same one.

Writing was the first case, and Plato's reproach —that it would weaken memory— was correct and also irrelevant, because without it there would be no philosophy to argue it.

What worried him about the present case is the speed and who administers the dose. A driver who follows instructions for years stops building the map, and the knowledge that is externalised does not come back on its own.

He called that proletarianisation: not losing the job, losing the know-how and staying employed.
