Description

On 11 March 1913 Russolo signed L'arte dei rumori, arguing that the noise of the city was already musical material, and built the intonarumori to play it. The print is the division between what was admitted as sound and everything else.

Exploration

Russolo was a painter and knew no music. That turned out to be an advantage, because what he proposed does not occur to anyone who has studied harmony: that the industrial city had created a repertoire of new sounds — the engine, the tram, the siren, the crowd — and that an ear trained on the violin heard them as a nuisance because it had no other slot to put them in.

He built machines to produce them. Wooden boxes with a crank and a horn, tunable, which roared, whistled and crackled, and he took them into a concert hall with a seated audience.

The audience responded with fists. There were fights in the stalls in more than one city.

Almost all the devices were lost in the second war and a few minutes of poor recordings survive.

What survived was the slot. A century later nobody disputes that a noise can be material, and that argument was won by someone who could not read a score.
