Description

The Dreamachine, from 1961, is a slotted cylinder turning at 78 revolutions per minute in front of a bulb: the images happen with the eyes closed, in whoever is looking. The print is that cylinder laid flat.

Exploration

The Dreamachine is a cardboard cylinder with slots cut into it, turning on a record player at seventy-eight revolutions, with a bulb inside. You sit in front of it with your eyes closed and the light flickers at a frequency that matches the brain's own at rest.

What you see are shapes and colours that are not in the room. The visual system produces them on its own, and they are different for every person.

Gysin built it with a mathematician friend after noticing the effect on a bus, passing down an avenue of trees with the sun in front. They tried to patent it and sell it as a household appliance, and no company bought it.

They published the plan so that anyone could make one at home, and people still do.

It is the only object in this series that produces nothing: it emits neither image nor sound. It only flickers at the right speed and waits for whoever is looking to do the rest.
