Description

Stiegler spent five years in prison for armed robbery, from 1978 to 1983, and it was in the cell that he began reading philosophy; he told it himself in Passer à l'acte. The print is an explosion of fragments in one ink, with no figure and no face.

Exploration

Stiegler found philosophy in a cell, with no library and only what they let through the door. Five years reading and rebuilding from memory what he could not look up.

His central idea comes from there, and it is no biographical coincidence. Human memory is not inside the skull: it is outside, in the objects that hold it — writing, the disc, the archive. We are the only species that inherits a memory it did not live, and so the only one whose past can be administered from outside.

The consequence is uncomfortable. If memory is external, whoever controls the support controls what can be remembered; and today the support is not a public library but a service with terms of use. Stiegler understood it before anyone because his access had already been taken away once.
